I've grown up and lived in Fort Wayne my entire life--except that one year during which I lived in Japan and went to kindergarten. I figure it's time to try something new. In less than two months, I'll move to New York. For Spring Break, I traveled to the east coast to dip my toes in the city that never sleeps and prepare myself for the big move. I learned some things whilst doing some things.
The Metro
Never--NEVER--look at the subway advertisements.
Actually, most of them were okay and some of them were funny.
Because of the gross ones, though, it's not worth it. Keep your eyes on the floor or in a book.
Outdoor Entertainment
You can watch people do cool things.
This guy was making giant bubbles.
Extracurricular Activities
I want to shake hands with the person who named this building.
Actually, no. Touching the person who named this place is probably a terrible idea.
I laughed when I saw the sign, but then I felt bad when I saw the people going in.
It was noon.
Personal Hygiene
The subway is filthy.
You can go into the nearest Duane Reed's--New York's Walgreens--and purchase one or two.
FYI: there are dozens next to the cash register. I searched the aisles for 10 minutes.
Tourist Attractions
Do the touristy things like visit 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Just know that you accidentally might be taking a picture of people getting their picture taken.
They seem like a lovely couple.
Realizing Dreams
Ever since elementary school, one of my many dreams was to see SNL cast members at 30 Rock.
I did that. It was wonderful.
Except for the high school students on a field trip who blocked Lorne Michaels from my view. Ummm...pretty sure it was past their bed time. Whatever. I'm not bitter.
Also, make sure to get a good photographer to go with you.
Or take the picture yourself. That way you only have yourself to blame for bad quality.
Shopping
Get a functional souvenir.
This is a great way to tell your friends "I went there." And--with this souvenir--you can go anywhere!
Snack Time
Pop into a small bakery and get quarter-sized cupcakes.
The price was worth it to try a caramel-apple flavored cupcake.
Nourishment
In New York, you can have pizza for dinner three nights in a row.
But just because you can doesn't mean you should. I did, though. It was delicious.
I was only in New York for three days, so these aren't supposed to be "tips." I just wanted to share what I observed and learned. I realize I could have just posted status updates or created an online album. That might have been the better route. But this way you get to see what I did in one place without the hassle of Facebook. Also, I haven't blogged in awhile.
Additionally, I'm trying to use Facebook less. I mean, honestly, who wants to know when someone in chat was last logged in on their phone. Not me. (I do, actually. I write down what time people were logged in and for how many minutes and keep all of this data stored in my diary that I keep underneath my pillow. It's a hobby. Also, don't look under my pillow. There's nothing of interest.) ...I'm getting off track.
Anyways...
While in two months time I know I will miss my hometown, I know I've found a place that will offer me enough things to treat my homesickness.
Things like lifelong dreams and giant bubbles and tiny cupcakes.
